The International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation was established in 1950 and is usually referred to as ITC because of its original name, the International Training Centre for Aerial Survey. Based in Enschede, in the east of the Netherlands, it is the largest institute of international higher education in the country.

Knowledge Field
Geo-information science and earth observation consists of a combination of tools and methods for the collection, storage and processing of geospatial data, and for the dissemination and use of these data and of services based on these data.

The Institute, headed by its rector, has some 130 scientific staff of more than 25 nationalities in six scientific departments that cover its knowledge field. There are also a number of support departments. The Institute fulfils its mission throuhh deploying its staff in three core processes: research, education and project services.

The Institute aims to provide international education through knowledge exchange. Underpinning this mission is the international recognition of the Institute as a centre of
excellence in its knowledge field and its position as a node in an international knowledge network, its mission is substantially directed at capacity building and institutional
