The International Graduate course Business Information Systems aims at international students in their final stage of studies in related fields. Students will be awarded a Bachelors degree after completion of the course and completion of studies, sometimes in conjunction with their studies at Degree level at their Home University.

In the Dutch national curriculum, the Business Information Systems (BIS) courses focus on the modelling of business processes and designing and developing the supporting information systems whether for the Internet or otherwise. The main concerns of BIS are analysis of business problems and modelling solutions. The development of information systems is mainly incorporated in order to show the validity of the solutions. Apart from business processes a strong emphasis is put on the modelling of information and the use of CASE tools that support these models.

The BIS course at Saxion Universties of Applied Sciences is known for its practical business approach, concentrating on information modelling based on the communication about actual business processes. This is achieved by offering a variety of models and methodologies that target the specific problems encountered in the industry. Our graduates are well-trained information professionals in the analysis and design of business processes and information systems.

The Bachelors in Business Information Systems program offers foreign students the opportunity to benefit from this achievement. The core programme consists of three strands:

  • Business: starting with analysing specific business problems students are stimulated to model possible solutions and to weigh each alternative according to its merits; apart from more traditional methodologies, BIS applies UML to business process (re)-design.
  • Information systems: based on business models information requirements are modelled not only according to traditional methodologies but also using advanced communication oriented models (FCO-IM, ORM); CASE tools will be used and their architectures will be introduced.
  • Systems development: here the models derived from the business and information architecture are implemented using databases, internet access technology, case tools and some programming skills.

The emphasis of the courses is placed on the practical-orientated integration of the three main subjects. Students will become familiar with the strong dependencies between the activities of business modelling, information modelling and information systems development. The Bachelors in BIS aims at making student familiar with the professional application of the skills gained during the year. Throughout the course students will work on practical assignments in which they apply knowledge and skills gained from theory combined with practical experience in the context of actual business settings. Graduation will be assessed by means of an assignment of some considerable complexity: students will have to show that they are able to complete a preferably practical research assignment and to compile a written and oral report.
