Profile
The MA International Leisure and Tourism Studies (MAILTS) is designed to
equip students with the necessary professional. academic and personal
competencies to be able to play a significant role in the development of leisure
and tourism at the local or regional district level. This role is based on an
analytical, critical attitude in which you learn to make responsible decisions
with an open mind to the interests of the community, the industry and the
customer.

People who want to increase their understanding of Leisure and Tourism; People
who want to acquire basic conipetencies to work as a professional in leisure and
tourism e.g. as a policy maker, developer or planner at the regional or local
level or as a consultant.
Specific Modules of MAILTS
Theoretical perspectives on leisure and Tourism Foundation
Introduction to the concepts of leisure and tourism. Conceptual
contributions from disciplines like philosophy, psychology, sociology,
geography, and economics are explored.
Quality of leisure and tourism
The module discusses how leisure and tourism contribute to the Quality of
Life of the people involved by looking at different value perspectives. It
explores how leisure and tourism impact personal, social, economic,
environmental and developmental aspects of human life simultaneously. Students
are trained in constructing conceptual models, supporting them in preparing the
dissertation proposal.
Policy and planning for leisure and tourism
Module focussing on strategic analysis. Introduction to the main aspects of
the policy mid planning process. The emphasis is on policy and planning for
sustainable development at the local and regional level. Project Cycle
Management (developed by the European Union) is used as a basic approach.
Objectives
As a graduate from the MA programme in International Leisure and Tourism
Studies and a future actor in the leisure and tourism industry you will be able
to:
- monitor, describe and analyse relevant international and national
developments in the leisure and tourism industry
- assess, understand individual, social, economic, environmental and
developmental values of (planned) leisure and tourism developments;
- contribute to the planning and sustainable development of leisure and
tourism at the local or regional level in the context of the national and
international developments and based on a responsible and fair weighing of the
interests of the stakeholders involved;
- apply appropriate qualitative and quantitative research methods to collect
meaningful information to support the decision-maldng process, both through
desk research and field research;
- support your decisions with sound argumentation, both orally and in
writing;
- demonstrate a well-developed system of personal values;
- demonstrate a set of effective leadership skills.
Admission Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Economics, Business Studies,
Social Sciences, LeisureTourism, Hospitality or related
fields;
Students with non-economic or non-related Bachelors are evaluated on a per
case basis;
- Work experience in related fields is not required but is recommended;
- TOEFL
score of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based) or
IELTS score of 6.0
